School bus tracking without a GPS device
Every vendor in India sells “GPS bus tracking.” Most of them mean: buy a tracker, pay a SIM rent, wait for installation, then hope the device stays powered. Educlawd tracks the trip from the driver’s phone. That is a different product, and it is the one schools in our region can actually run.
What hardware GPS really costs a school
A tracker per bus is not a one-time purchase. You pay for the unit, fitting, a data plan, replacements after damage, and a vendor visit when the device goes dark. For a ten-bus fleet that is a capital project before a single parent has opened the app.
Smaller schools delay the project for years. Larger schools buy the hardware and still run a WhatsApp group because the live map is unreliable. The parent never cared about the device. They cared whether the bus left and whether it is close.
How phone-based tracking works in practice
The driver starts the trip in the Educlawd app. Location is shared for that trip. Parents see status without you installing a box under the dashboard. If a driver changes or a vehicle is hired for a season, you are not waiting on hardware.
This is not a toy. It is the same operational idea as every consumer maps app: the phone already has GNSS. Schools were oversold a dedicated device because the old vendors sold devices.
When you might still want a dedicated tracker
If a contractor forbids driver phones, or you need ignition-wired tamper evidence, a hardware unit can still make sense. Most Indian school fleets do not start there. Start with the phone, prove parent adoption, then add hardware only where a route truly needs it.

Does the driver need a special GPS handset?
No. A regular Android or iOS phone with the Educlawd app is enough for live trip sharing.
What if the driver’s data is poor on a mountain route?
Location updates follow the phone’s network, same as any maps app. Schools still get trip start/stop and the last known point — which is what offices use when a call comes in.
Is this less accurate than a vehicle tracker?
Phone GNSS is the same satellite system. Dedicated trackers mainly add wiring, a separate SIM, and a vendor contract — not a different sky.
